If you haven't heard, UH fired Bob Nash as their head basketball coach.

Whether you like the decision or not. You cannot question the character and loyalty of Nash.

All together he put in 31-years as a player, assistant coach, and head coach.

He was always straight up and honest every time I talked to him and his family is just as good.

In the end, the decision to let Nash go was dictated by wins, losses, and the impact on revenue.

No doubt this was UH athletic director Jim Donovan's toughest decision and worst day today.

Now it's Hawaii's turn to help all three - UH, Nash, and Donovan - by supporting each.

Aloha Bob and thanks for your service to Hawaii.

Former UH Men's volleyball assistant coach Tino Reyes is back in the collegiate game.

Reyes was named the new UH Hilo women's head coach. He takes over for the recently departed Bruce Atkinson.

Vulcan volleyball is at a good place these days and the hiring of Reyes should go a long ways towards keeping it up there and going even further.

I've known Tino for years... I think we actually met in my younger days (long gone) when I first started playing club volleyball. He was always fun to talk to, offered great tips, and never laughed at my lack of ability.

He's truly a good person and loves the game. His positive, friendly, "local" style should be a nice fit for the Hilo program.

Over the past three years the Vulcans were 69-14, won two Pacific-West Conference championships, and made the 2009 West Region championship.

Additionally, Hilo returns all-conference setter Katie Swenson, hitters Kawena Cubi-Otineru and Leilani Ramsey, middle Hillary Hurley, and backcourt specialsts Lauren Tonokawa and Shawna Kaiura.

Tino does have experience with the women's game. He coached under Dave Shoji for two seasons before joining Mike Wilton and the men's team.

How about this fun fact. Reyes ties to Hilo include being a member of the 1976-77 Vulcan basketball team.

Welcome home to Hilo Tino, very happy for you my friend!

If you haven't heard, the Winter Olympics are over.

I think for most americans, the winter games are more of novelty rather than every day/night must-see viewing. The summer games draw a lot more eyeballs and attention. Face it we know, understand, and like those events better.

Now with all of that said... I would surf through them a bit every day. Finding something I liked was the hardest part of tuning in. However, the way NBC scheduled them, it wasn't user friendly. I mean I work for the cable company and couldn't find an easy way to find the events I wanted!

Things I liked...

The USA had its most successful run in the winter olympics. Winning the overall medal count.

Vancouver's beauty shots...man...gotta visit that place some time soon!

Speedskating...especially that team pursuit stuff...gotta love two teams on the same ice at the same time...first teams across the finish line wins. Very cool...pun intended.

Hockey! Loved the gold medal game. I don't follow the puck pretty much any time other than a situation like this. But the action and drama made me a big fan for at least a day. How amazing was that final second goal for the USA to tie it up and send it to overtime? Bummer we lost the gold...but great effort.

What I didn't like...

Opening ceremonies...came off lacking. Then again the Chinese did the summer games so well, everything after pretty much would be viewed lame.

Curling... Don't get me wrong I think it must be fun to play and even watch in small doses. But it's really like a bar game except done with the humans on the surface. Why have this... And not have women's ski jumping? Yup the men jump for distance but not the women. Let the ladies fly!

Closing ceremonies... Well at least they got all four pillars to stand up. But the famous people saying lines - lame. Inflatable animals - lame. Every band and singer lyp-synching - really lame.

See you in two years when things really heat up with the next summer games!

Maui built has taken on a whole new meaning after Lahainaluna's D1 state basketball championship.

The Lady Luna's changed Hawaii's gymscape with a thrilling come from behind victory over Konawaena this past Friday.

I guess I should back up and say Thursday night, all of us at the game smiled when it was realized the D1 championship would - not - feature on Oahu team (OIA or ILH). This alone was a big deal as no HHSAA D1 final had been all non-Oahu.

We're talking any sport too, not just basketball for the all neighbor island finale thing.

Konawaena was poised to bring home another state championship to the Big Island. But there's no shame in second best either after the game the Wildcats turned in.

Kona didn't so much lose it as Lahaina won it.

What fuels both of these schools basketball programs are strong club teams in their respective communities. Prep sports are so competitive now, this is pretty much the blueprint for success.

A game plan for winning that can be used any where.

Just like the west side of Maui, which now claims the Valley Isle's first basketball title - boys or girls.

Tiger Woods will make his first public comments in months since his world imploded.

The golfing great has been raked over the coals for what he calls transgressions in his personal life. Frankly, I could care less about that aspect because no matter what you think, it is indeed between he and his wife and family.

What he says or doesn't say is going to be highly controlled. No doubt he and his handlers have gone over the content a million times. This will not be a true "press conference" but rather more of a statement. No questions will be allowed from the selected group of media reps.

Of course this fits the Tiger way of life. He is a control minded person in golf, life, and now scandal.

But it's too bad he won't take the podium Friday, let go of control, and just say "ok fire away, all questions answered." Do this one time and probably the mess starts to go away from the public eye.

Just look how stupid and incomplete for the public's opinion were the denials or limited statements by Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, and so on.

It's true Woods did not break any laws. But for a man who makes his life via the public eye, sorry but he's got to talk, really talk when the times aren't just about winning events.

So I'll watch Friday and listen in to Woods' crafted statement. We'll see what he delivers and whether it does more good or just stokes the tabloid flames even more.
